Coarse-Graining
Coarse-graining is the construction of a reduced representation that preserves variables relevant to the question while omitting lower-level detail.
Macro-level description is unavoidable in real science because no practical observer tracks every microscopic degree of freedom.
The scientific issue is therefore not whether a reduced description exists, but what information it preserves and what distinctions it loses.
A useful coarse-grained variable should earn its place through prediction, explanation, intervention, compression, or another stated objective.
History-sensitive systems make this especially important: two states that look equivalent under one coarse-graining can behave differently later if the representation discarded relevant retained history.
