Operational and Adjudicable Concepts

Words such as life, adaptation, identity, and intelligence are useful in ordinary language, but difficult cases expose how many different questions can be hidden inside one label.

The research program therefore does not begin by assuming that a familiar word names one simple internal property.

It asks instead:

What observable distinctions would make the attribution stronger, weaker, or wrong?

Specify the Unit First

Before attributing a property, specify what system is being evaluated.

A cell, organism, model, model-plus-memory system, organization, and human–AI system are different causal units. Evidence about one should not silently be transferred to another.

Specify the Environment and Timescale

A capability demonstrated in one environmental range or one observation window should not automatically be generalized beyond it.

This is especially important for adaptive behaviour and intelligence claims. The relevant evidence is indexed to the system, environment, resources, and timescale actually tested.

Separate Current Manifestation from Retained Capability

A system can retain capability-relevant organization while the corresponding system-level property is not currently being manifested.

Connection Theory therefore separates active operation from retained state, lineage continuity, and current applicability.

It also separates Organizational Persistence—continued organization through component turnover and self-reconstruction—from the stricter lineage question of Organizational Continuity across interruption.

Compare Competing Explanations

Observed success can result from different mechanisms.

Depending on the question, alternatives may include:

  • fixed regulation;
  • chance;
  • memorization;
  • retrieval;
  • context or policy switching;
  • external control;
  • omitted state;
  • or genuine persistent system change.

An attribution becomes stronger when the experiment is designed so that these alternatives predict different outcomes.

Intelligence Is Treated Carefully

The current research does not equate intelligence with adaptation.

Adaptive dynamics are mechanism-level phenomena. Adaptive behaviour is an observable manifestation. Intelligence is treated as a higher-level attribution grounded in an integrated behavioural profile across time and conditions.

A fuller current treatment is now available as the public research essay What Is Intelligence?. The separate /r/intelligence-6a37 route remains a frozen recipient-era snapshot for previously sent outreach links.

Life Is Treated at the Organismal Level

The public life series separates material composition, active living dynamics, retained organization, recoverability, and continuity of the same organism.

This prevents residual cellular activity, temporary suppression, recovery, reconstruction, and organismal death from being collapsed into one test.

Methodological Standard

Across these topics, the preferred sequence is:

  1. specify the system and frame;
  2. state the competing explanations;
  3. define observable differences;
  4. pre-specify what would count against the claim;
  5. test under matched conditions;
  6. narrow or replace the claim if a stronger alternative survives.

The purpose of an operational concept is not to make a philosophical label sound scientific. It is to make the attribution adjudicable.
